Small Towns, Castles, and Natural Wonders

October 28 – November 6, 2025

The Highlands of Scotland and the Isle of Skye are a landscape photographer’s dream, offering up forests, glens, mountains, lakes, rivers, coastlines, and castles of incomparable beauty. The charm of this area abounds in the castles, farms, and towns we will photograph. The Jacobite Train, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter films, will take you back to another century as it thunders past. As you watch the sunrise at the Old Man of Storr or the Quiraing, you will be awed by the beauty of the vista. The picturesque coastlines at Neist Point and Elgol demonstrate the primal power of nature.

Join us on this workshop to learn or improve your composition skills, using long exposures for silky-smooth water, stitching images for panoramas, and post-processing in Lightroom. We’ll be out in the field shooting as much as possible but will also make time for image reviews.

We love photographing Scotland, and we’re sure you will, too. The charming villages and lodging on this trip will win you over. Once you set foot in this magical land, you’ll want to return again and again.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

October 28, 2025: Arrive in Glasgow, Scotland, by 11:00 AM this day, or if you prefer, arrive a day or two earlier to adjust to the time change. We’ll meet at 1:00 PM, drive to Glencoe, photograph the sunset, check in to our hotel, and enjoy a fabulous dinner.

October 29–30, 2025: Our location affords us easy access to all the streams, lochs, moors, and mountains we want to photograph: Lochen na h-achlaise at Rannoch Moor, Loch Baa, Buchaille Etive Mor (“the Buckle”), The Three Sisters of Glencoe, and more. We’ll be shooting from before sunrise through sunset as much as possible. We’ll also make time for image reviews to go over composition, image processing, and more.

October 31 – November 4, 2025: This morning, we will check out of our hotel to transfer to our lodging on the Isle of Skye. But first, we’ll stop to photograph the iconic Jacobite Train, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter movies. After our ferry ride to Skye, we’ll explore the coast and islands, taking in the sense of isolation. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean pound the white sandy shores of the Hebridean islands off the northwest coast of Scotland, shifting and shaping the sands.

We will spend three days and nights on Skye, photographing its geological wonders. The Old Man of Storr, the Trotternish Ridge, and Elgo are all iconic locations for the landscape photographer. We’ll be out before sunrise and after sunset to catch the magical light that falls on this most ancient of landscapes. With luck, we will have some clear skies at night to shoot the stars!

Techniques we will teach and reinforce include: use of neutral density filters for creative effects with waterfalls and the seashore, shooting (and processing) for high dynamic range, panoramas, and more. We will work with you on the art of composition and achieving proper exposure. And we’ll ensure time for reviewing images and Lightroom instruction.

November 5, 2025: After sunrise, breakfast, and check out, we leave the Isle of Skye for Eilan Donan Castle in the Highlands. This beautiful 13th Century castle, set out on the water, affords innumerable photographic opportunities, and we’ll explore many of them. We’ll photograph it in the afternoon light and on through sunset light into the blue hour. Dinner and check-in to our hotel will end our final full day of the workshop.

November 6, 2025: After our morning shoot and breakfast, we will depart for Glasgow Airport. Flights home or elsewhere can be anytime after 4:00 PM.

Moderate: You must be able to do walks of a mile or possibly longer. There will be long days and lots of vehicle travel between locations.

Arrive Glasgow Airport (GLA), Glasgow, Scotland before 11:00 AM on October 28, 2025. Flights out can be made after 4:00 PM on November 6, 2025. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.

“This was my fourth trip with Muench Workshops and my second to Scotland. The workshop to the Isle of Lewis & Harris was simply wonderful! Eishken Estate, our home on the island was charming and gave us a glimpse of a bygone age. The food was excellent! But most importantly the photographic opportunities were outstanding as were David, Marcus, and Harry. ”

— Kerrin Lahr, Scotland Isle of Lewis and Harris '22

“The whole experience was outstanding. I thought the workshop would be good but I was blown away by just how wonderful it was. Both of the instructors were absolutely outstanding. I would pick another workshop with them and know it would be great. ”
