This Slovenia and Croatia autumn photography workshop captures the heart of the season across two of Europe’s most scenic landscapes. From the Julian Alps to the Adriatic coast, you’ll photograph mist-filled valleys, glowing forests, and storybook villages framed by the soft light of fall.
In Slovenia, our journey begins among the mirror-like waters of Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, where sunrise reflections and mountain backdrops invite creative landscape photography. We’ll continue through Vintgar Gorge, with its rushing rivers and waterfalls, before heading south to the Karst region, where vineyards, salt pans, and stone hamlets reveal the country’s rustic charm. In Ljubljana, the lively café culture, open-air markets, and riverside architecture offer inspiring opportunities for street photography and cityscapes.
Crossing into Croatia, we’ll explore Plitvice Lakes National Park, a haven of turquoise pools and cascading falls surrounded by golden autumn foliage. With guidance from our pros, you’ll refine your composition, exposure, and color techniques while capturing the diverse textures and tones that define autumn in the Balkans.
Learning is constant throughout this workshop, with focused practice on working with autumn color, long exposures for rivers and waterfalls, panoramic stitching, street photography, and others as applicable. Working alongside you, we strengthen your creative vision and teach techniques in composition, camera work, and post-processing that give lasting improvements. You’ll leave this workshop with a stronger eye, a more confident workflow, and a portfolio of images that reflects the beauty of Slovenia and Croatia in autumn.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive at Ljubljana airport and transfer to Bled. The adventure starts with an afternoon shoot to capture ‘golden light’ at the iconic Lake Bled. Evening get-together for a welcome dinner and to discuss plans for the tour.
We’ll take 2 full days to explore the beautiful Gorenjska region, starting with a sunrise shoot at the shore of Lake Bled. Visit the spectacular Vintgar Gorge, the perfect location to experiment with capturing fast-flowing water, and try out some long exposures. Our second glacial lake is Bohinj, which has a different feel. Here, we’ll take time to hone our composition skills at the lake shore and capture creative reflections. A short drive takes us to the surrounding picturesque villages, where you’ll have the opportunity to capture traditional agricultural architecture, including the landmark hayracks of Slovenia, as well as scenes of rural village life. Cap off the evenings with a sunset shoot at the lakeside.
Our route takes us over the Vrsic pass, the highest pass in the Julian Alps with incredible views across the Slovenian Alps. We travel to the Soca River Valley to explore more of the Triglav National Park. Capture the incredible emerald waters of the Soca and discover gorges and waterfalls as we hike along the riverbanks. As well as capturing stunning landscapes, we may be lucky with some wildlife photography. We will also take the opportunity to photograph the historical World War I remnants along the trail. Our route will take us on an exciting tour of some of the highest mountains in Slovenia, offering incredible views across Slovenia and into Italy.
After breakfast, we will drive northeast towards the wine-growing region. On the way, we will stop at Ptuj town to photograph one of Slovenia’s most picturesque medieval towns. We’ll have two days to explore the beautiful countryside dotted with vineyards and hilltop churches. We can start our day by capturing sunrise and possible mists over glowing vineyards. We will also taste some of this welcoming region’s best food and wine, all locally grown and organic. In partnership with our fantastic local Pros, we will explore some of the hidden gems of Slovenia that most foreign tourists miss.
We leave the vineyards and head to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and a gem of a city. We’ll wander the charming streets of the old city, camera in hand, and capture the highlights of Ljubljana, including baroque churches, diverse architectural details, and the castle. We’ll try our hand at some street photography and candid portraits in Ljubljana’s bustling marketplace and along the café-strewn riverbanks. We also travel to the nearby hills to photograph hilltop churches at sunrise if the weather allows – and if we’re lucky, with morning mists!
After breakfast, we say farewell to Slovenia and drive to a stunning national park in Croatia—Plitvice Lakes. We’ll head to the park after check-in for our evening photography and sunset shoot.
We’ll have a full day photographing this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site’s lakes, waterfalls, and caves. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to try different photography techniques using tripods and long exposures and work on composition. Enjoy free time exploring the lakes alone before meeting in the late afternoon to make the most of the play of golden light and reflections in the water.
Morning photography in the park. We will visit one of the sunrise locations at Plitvice Lakes or head to Rastoke village, where the Korana River created another set of beautiful waterfalls and cascades. Transfer to Zagreb airport (2hrs) to catch your flight home. Transfer to Ljubljana airport is also possible (4 hrs).
