Spain's Rugged Northern Coast and Charming Medieval Villages

June 14 – 23, 2025

Spain’s rugged north coast is home to fantastic sea arches, stacks, and rock formations. We visit in June for the long days, and the sun rises and sets over the water at most locations. This is an excellent opportunity to hone your long-exposure skills and use of filters. It’s not all about seascapes, though, as we’ll also head to an impressive pink cathedral high up in the mountains and stay in a couple of picturesque villages where you can test your skills at capturing some authentic Spanish street life.

We’ll also explore the maze of twisting cobbled alleyways between crooked terracotta buildings in the medieval village of Albarracín. Small enough to walk around in a couple of hours, Albarracín has a charm that you’ll enjoy capturing through your lens. With a prominent and iconic colorful cathedral, castle ruins, historic churches, and fortified stone walls, the photographic potential here is almost endless.

Along the way, we’ll work on composition, long exposures, using filters, and more. Plus, we’ll have our signature image review sessions. Expect some great food and great times, too!

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

June 14, 2025: Arrive in Madrid any time this day. We’ll stay in city center and have an introductory dinner and prepare for the days ahead.

June 15, 2025: After breakfast, we depart to Albarracín, a 4-hour scenic journey through rolling hills and mountainous canyons. We’ll arrive at our destination late afternoon. After checking into our ideally located hotel, we’ll give everyone an orientation tour to allow you to familiarise yourself with the key landmarks. It’ll then be your time to explore all Albarracín has to offer and capture its unique character with your camera.

June 16–17, 2025: Wander the maze of alleyways to find unique subjects and compositions. Our pros will be on hand to give you any needed assistance and encourage you to notice the changes in light throughout the day. We will hold image review sessions during the day, advising on how to improve your shots further. This is not the place to rush around and snap as much as you can—it’s all about slowing down and learning to observe the light and how it affects the potential of your chosen scene. Be prepared to clock up some serious steps, as all the locations will be accessed by foot.

June 18, 2025: After a final morning shoot and breakfast in Albarracín, we head north on the longest drive of this itinerary (about 6 hours) to a very different landscape. We’ll stop for lunch along the way and aim to arrive in plenty of time to have dinner and capture the sunset from the cliff tops overlooking the first of many sea arches we will photograph over the coming days. Our base for the next two nights is the charming town of Llanes.

June 19, 2025: In addition to some stunning coastal locations, we will head into the mountains of Covadonga to visit its beautiful cathedral. We’ll have a couple of hours to wander around and shoot it from the best angles before having lunch in the area. We’ll return to our hotel for a well-earned siesta before heading out for our dusk shoot at a nearby beach.

June 20, 2025: Today, we start working our way eastwards along Spain’s north coast. Our ultimate destination is the picturesque fishing village of Cudillero, our base for the next two nights. You may not want to leave this village, but we will attempt to drag you away to visit some of Spain’s most impressive sea arches and stacks. If you like seafood, then you won’t go hungry here, as the catch is landed right on the seafront harbor.

June 21, 2025: We’ll aim to fit in a sunrise shoot before returning for breakfast. You’ll then have some free time to wander around Cudillero and even buy a few souvenirs, as this will be your final opportunity to take a piece of Spain back with you. We’ll head out for our sunset location in the late afternoon and explore another idyllic beach.

June 22, 2025: Today, we embark on our final leg of the coastal journey, heading for one of the most iconic locations in Spain—As Catedrais Beach. This is highly influenced by the tides, so we’ll need to time our visit around the height and state of the water but be prepared to get wet feet here, as we may have to wade through knee-deep waves to access the area of beach where all the best shots are to be found. Reef sandals and swimming gear will be as useful as your camera here.

June 23, 2025: We’ll have another chance to visit As Catedrais if the conditions promise to be better than we experienced the previous day. After breakfast and checkout, we will drive to Asturias Airport (OVD) for departures after 1:00 PM. Alternatively, we can drop you at Santander train station in the afternoon, from where you can get a direct train back to Madrid (4 hours).
