This infrared photography workshop is an excellent opportunity to discover the breathtaking beauty of Adirondack Park in upstate New York, one of the most picturesque regions in the northeastern United States. Designed for photographers passionate about black-and-white infrared landscapes, this hands-on Adirondack photography workshop immerses you in quiet lakes, mountain ridgelines, and forest reflections transformed by infrared light. Mornings bring mist drifting across still waters, birch leaves glowing white, and dark skies that create a surreal contrast unique to infrared photography. You’ll capture mountain vistas, woodland streams, and open lakes while refining your technical control and creative eye. Plus, the timing of the workshop avoids peak bug season, so you can stay focused on your photography!
With expert instruction, you’ll learn how to use infrared-converted cameras, composition, exposure, and post-processing to craft expressive monochrome images that bring out the ethereal character of this landscape, making this an ideal infrared photography workshop for photographers of all levels. Our image reviews are designed to help you recognise what makes a strong monochrome infrared image and how to grow your personal vision through thoughtful processing in Lightroom.
Whether you already own an infrared-converted camera or are just getting started, you will have support every step of the way. We will advise on camera setups, lens choices, and practical field workflow, and we can recommend reliable options for renting or purchasing a converted body before you arrive.
Throughout the workshop, you will be encouraged to experiment, compare results with fellow participants, and build a repeatable approach to infrared photography that you can apply wherever you shoot next. For a brief introduction to the basics, we recommend reading our infrared photography blog post before the workshop and reaching out with any questions.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
We’ll pick you up at or near the Albany airport at 12:00 PM for our 90-minute drive to the lodge, which will be our base for the next five days. Once settled, we’ll briefly meet to review infrared photography techniques and technical concerns before heading out to our first location. Dinner is followed by a brief image review session to ensure all technical issues are handled here on the first day.
We will photograph locations within the Adirondacks’ Eastern and High Peaks regions, specially selected for infrared photography. We’ll be out from the early morning hours and a full day of photography. One of the unique attributes of infrared photography is that midday lighting conditions are excellent for infrared shooting, so less emphasis will be placed on sunrise and sunset.
Locations include mossy streams deep in forests of the Pharaoh Wilderness Area, a multitude of small ponds and wetland bogs throughout the North Hudson region, the decay of abandoned Frontier Town theme park, and, of course, the Schroon Lake shoreline where it’s common to witness early morning fog and the common loon. The Boreas Ponds tract offers beautifully framed views of the Adirondack High Peaks from the south. Blue Ridge Falls provides many compositional opportunities for water cascading over the rocks in a forest setting. The Newcomb region has forest scenes filled with northern white cedars along the lakeshores of Rich, Harris, and Woodruff Lakes. The Hudson River also flows through this area close to its source below Mt. Marcy, and we know of several easy access vantages over it. We’ll photograph classic scenes of the Lake Placid and Keene Valley areas, including Connery Pond, Adirondack Loj Road fields, and Cascade Lakes. Elizabethtown region is often overlooked by photographers and offers gems, including Split Rock Falls and amazing views of the Giant Wilderness. We’ll view the Champlain Valley from the most accessible Adirondack fire tower to ascend on Belfry Mt.
These will be days full of photography, but we’ll also make time to review your images. We’ll explore best practices for processing infrared images, discuss composition concepts, and more.
This morning we have our final early morning shoot, followed by breakfast and checkout. We’ll drive those going back to the airport for flights after 2:00 PM.
