Arctic Landscapes and Northern Lights

January 30 – February 8, 2025

Join us along the Arctic Circle to photograph Norway’s dramatic Lofoten Islands! Winter in Northern Norway is a magical experience, especially at night when the aurora curls in the sky and reflects on the sea. Our pros and local guides know all the vantage points to get you the best shots!

We’ll photograph jagged mountain peaks, icy fjords, frozen lakes, rocky seacoasts, white sand beaches, and rustic fishing villages. This trip even includes a fabulous and private sea eagle safari, where you can photograph the world’s largest eagle at close range with epic snowy peaks in the background. With luck and weather permitting, we will be treated to some of the best northern lights on the planet.

You’ll also learn high dynamic range shooting techniques, panoramas, long exposures during the day (and night!), and star and aurora imagery. Our priority is photography, so expect to be in the field plenty! We will also feature our much-loved image reviews and post-processing instructions with Lightroom. Ready for a winter wonderland? Let’s go!

Itinerary

Our itinerary is planned—but we are always prepared to change things up based on weather and light conditions. Of course, at night we’ll be on watch for northern lights, and you can count on being awakened the instant we find them!

January 30, 2025: We will pick you up from the airport in Leknes and transport you to our charming accommodations in the classic rorbuer huts in Sakrisøy. If conditions allow, we will hunt for the aurora in the evening!

January 31 – February 2, 2025: We’ll have three days and nights to photograph in and around the picturesque villages of Å, Reine, Sakrisøy, and Hamnøy. We’ll visit the rocky shore of Flakstadøy and the nearby beaches: Skagsanden, Ramberg, and Yttersand. On February 2, after sunrise we will pack up and move to our hotel in Leknes.

February 3–5, 2025: After breakfast, we’ll head out to shoot sunrise at the beaches near Leknes: Haukland, Vik, Uttakleiv, and Storsandnes, all surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. As the day passes, we will visit more scenic locations on the islands of Vestvågøy and Flakstadøy, shooting until the last light fades from the sky. After dinner, we will keep watch for northern lights.

After another night of capturing northern lights at one of Lofoten’s beaches, we’ll sleep in a bit on February 5, have a great hot breakfast, then pack up and drive north to the town of Svolvaer – home of the sea eagles and Trollfjorden.

February 5–7, 2025: We will spend 3 nights in stunning Svolvaer exploring local scenes, chasing aurora, and enjoying an epic sea eagle safari! The sea eagles are the largest eagle species in the world, and you will have the opportunity for incredible up-close encounters with snowy mountain backdrops that are hard to believe.

February 8, 2025: After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll return to the Leknes airport for our flights home.
