Seattle’s waterfront, distinctive skyline, and surrounding mountains offer plenty to explore with your camera. Join us for five days of photography timed around the full moon, working with the changing light from sunrise through sunset and into the night. We’ll stay right on the waterfront in a premium location, putting you in the heart of the city’s activity and close to the scenes we’ve come to photograph.
In addition to the moon photography, you’ll also have opportunities to develop a portfolio of the key Seattle landmarks: the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the city skyline viewed from across Puget Sound. Your Muench Workshops pro will help you use planning software to choose viewpoints and anticipate where the sun or moon will appear in your composition—skills you can take home and apply wherever you photograph.
In the field, you’ll work on composition, exposure, lens selection, and stable long-lens technique. You’ll also explore city lights, traffic light trails, and balancing a bright sky with the skyline below. Personal instruction and several image reviews will help you see what’s working and make thoughtful adjustments at your next location, with guidance at your level.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Seattle, Washington before 10:00 AM today. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.
We’ll meet at the hotel at noon to get to know your fellow photographers and review our plans. We’ll begin with a photo walk along Seattle’s waterfront, including the area around the Seattle Great Wheel.
After a late lunch or early dinner, we’ll head to Gas Works Park for sunset and stay to photograph the city after dark before returning to the hotel.
We start early with sunrise from a park overlooking the city, then return to the hotel for breakfast and our first image review.
Following some downtime, we’ll visit Pike Place Market for street photography and a meal from its vendors. In the evening, we’ll work on sunset and moonrise compositions featuring the Space Needle, then visit another location to photograph traffic light trails.
We head out before dawn to photograph moonset and sunrise with the Seattle skyline. After breakfast, we’ll return to the hotel for an image review and time to rest.
Later, we’ll take a ferry across Puget Sound to a nearby island, photographing views of downtown Seattle and the surrounding islands along the way. A waterfront photo walk and early dinner will precede our evening session. From a distant viewpoint, we’ll use long lenses to photograph the rising moon with the mountains and city in the composition.
An early start takes us out for another planned moonset composition featuring the Space Needle, followed by city architecture in the morning light.
Back at the hotel, we’ll have breakfast, downtime, and an image review. Tides and conditions will guide our evening plans: we may travel farther afield for a distant view of moonrise or work from a location closer to the city.
We’ll leave before dawn for an island viewpoint, where we’ll use long lenses to photograph sunrise with Seattle and the Cascade Mountains in view.
On our return, we’ll stop to photograph boats and reflections in harbors framed by Washington’s evergreens. We’ll finish with a late brunch, and the workshop will conclude in the early afternoon.
Flights out can be made after 2:00 PM today.
