Nordic Landscapes and Northern Lights
Come with us to the Norwegian Arctic Circle, and photograph the dramatic Lofoten Islands. Winter in the Lofoten Islands is a magical experience for any photographer, and is even better at night, when the northern lights curl in the sky, reflected on the mountains and the sea.
We’ll photograph jagged mountain peaks in and around Lofoten and Senja. Icy fjords and frozen lakes, rocky seacoasts, turquoise water, white sand beaches, rustic fishing villages, will be on display. If we’re lucky, and the weather is clear, we will be treated to some of the best northern lights on the planet.
We will teach techniques in high dynamic range shooting, panoramas, long exposures during the day (and night!), and star and aurora imagery. Photography is our priority, so expect to be out in the field plenty! We will also feature our much-loved image reviews, critiques, and post-processing instruction with Lightroom.
David Rosenthal will work together with Muench Workshops local pro and guide Cody Duncan to bring you a fantastic workshop experience. Cody has logged more days photographing along the northern coast of Norway than most anyone.
Sign up today and get ready for an other-worldly experience in Norway!
Lofoten and Senja, Norway
January 21–30, 2021
Itinerary and General Information
Our itinerary is planned—but we are always prepared to change things up, based on weather, and light conditions. Of course, at night we’ll be on watch for northern lights, and you can count on being awakened the instant we find them!
January 21, 2021: We will meet as a group in the airport in Leknes and drive about an hour south to our base in the beautiful fishing village of Sakrisøy in the heart of Lofoten.
January 22–24, 2021: After morning shoot and breakfast on the 22nd, we’ll begin taking advantage of the amazing low light—the arctic days are short, but the twilight and dawn last for hours, and the quality of light is amazing. In addition, if the skies are clear and the Northern lights come out, we stay up even longer! Some of our shooting locations will include:
Haukland and Utakleiv Beaches—Vestvågøya bright sand and crystal clear water make Haukland one of the most beautiful in Norway, and we’ll explore the rocks along the shore at Utakleiv.
Hamnøy is a small fishing village, we’ll have numerous opportunities within steps of our accommodations.
Olstind is a great viewpoint for sunrise.
Sunset at Å—this one-letter village is beautiful, and it’s at the southern end of the Lofoten Archipelago.
More beaches and seacoast—Flakstadoy-Skagsanden, Ramberg, Yttersand, and Myrland.
Accommodations in Sakrisøy: Sea cabins with private bedrooms and bathrooms.
January 24–26, 2021: After our morning shoot and breakfast, we’ll head back north one hour to Leknes, where we’ll spend two nights, at some of the most beautiful beaches in Lofoten.
Accommodations in Leknes: Comfortable hotel with private bedrooms and bathrooms.
January 26, 2021: We‘ll spend the morning and afternoon photographing the nearby beaches. An early dinner and then we drive to the airport in Leknes to board a Wideroe flight (ticket included) to Tromso. We will spend the night in Tromso at the Scandic Grand Tromso hotel.
January 27–29, 2021: After breakfast, we’ll make the scenic drive up to our second arctic base in the quaint town of Mefjordvær. This amazing little village is situated on the wild shores of the fjord surrounded by steep mountains and rugged ocean. We’ll spend two full days exploring various regions around our hotel.
Accommodations in Mefjordvær: We have private cabins for everyone, with private facilities and baths.
January 30, 2021: After breakfast the workshop concludes but we’ll provide transportation to the town of Tromsø, where everyone will catch flights home. Flights home need to be on the 1:50 PM flight, January 30th from Tromsø (TOS) to Oslo, then home or elsewhere.
Our transportation is in two winter-equipped minivans, with plenty of room for us and our photo gear. Lodging is double occupancy, with private bathrooms, we’ll find you a roommate as needed. Single occupancy is available, at an additional charge, just ask.
